Sound opens spaces in which something new can emerge.

TONATURO brings science and sound art together in distinctive experiential formats. Acousmatic composition is not used as a backdrop, but as a perceptual space in its own right.

TONATURO

One distinctive sound language – four experiential formats.

I am Julia – musicologist, composer and founder of TONATURO. I create acousmatic sound spaces that deliberately move beyond conventional relaxation and background music.

Instead of predictable musical structures, open movements emerge from space, noise, timbre, density and silence. Perception is not constantly asked to search for melody, metre or resolution. The TONATURO formats grow out of this particular approach to composition.

Acousmatic sound spaces – music that does not follow familiar song structures, but opens perception.

Resonance Keynotes

A keynote speaks to the mind. A Resonance Keynote involves the whole person.

A Resonance Keynote combines scientifically grounded impulses, storytelling and original acousmatic music in a format in which a subject is not only explained, but experienced.

The spoken impulse opens ideas, connections and new perspectives. At selected moments, language steps back and sound takes over. The music does not merely illustrate what has been said, nor does it serve as background. It creates an experiential space in which the preceding ideas can resonate, change and continue on another level.

Why acousmatic music?

My compositions deliberately differ from conventional relaxation or background music. They do not necessarily follow familiar structures of melody, metre, repetition and predictable resolution. Instead, open sound spaces emerge from movement, density, space, noise, voice and musical texture.

The music therefore prescribes less about where perception should move. Thoughts, inner images and personal associations can emerge without having to follow a fixed musical narrative. This is the core of the Resonance Keynote: the subject does not end with the spoken word. It is given a space in which it can continue to resonate.

For events designed to leave more than information

Resonance Keynotes are suited to congresses, conferences, corporate events, health and education formats, cultural events and distinctive evening programmes. Subject, dramaturgy and sound space can be adapted to occasion, audience and timeframe.

Mobile Sound Module

Sound spaces that travel to where people come together.

The Mobile Sound Module brings TONATURO's distinctive sound language directly into companies, seminars, hotels, cultural venues and events. It creates a temporary space in which acousmatic composition, spatial listening and conscious perception are connected.

The focus is not simply on playing music, but on creating an audible experiential space. The compositions unfold through loudspeakers in the room and, depending on the setting, can be combined with short impulses, periods of silence or simple listening prompts.

What makes the Mobile Sound Module distinctive?

The music does not follow familiar structures of conventional relaxation or background music. It works with space, movement, timbre, noise and density, deliberately leaving open how listeners internally organise what they experience.

This creates a format that can be flexibly integrated into existing events: as a stand-alone programme element, a transition between content-heavy sessions, or a deliberate counterpoint to language-dense formats.

Adaptable to place and occasion

The Mobile Sound Module is suited to seminars, conferences, workplace health formats, retreats, hotels, cultural events and distinctive evening programmes. Duration, spatial design and musical selection can be adapted to venue, group size and occasion.

Resonance Evenings

When sound, image and inner perception begin to resonate with one another.

Resonance Evenings are a shared format situated between acousmatic music, contemplative perception and visual art. They create a space in which listening is not confined to the ear, but can connect with inner images, memories, moods and visual impressions.

At the centre are original sound spaces that may be complemented by selected images, graphic scores or elements of visual art. The aim is not to establish a fixed relationship between music and image. Instead, an open experiential space emerges in which different sensory impressions can coexist and deepen one another.

An evening beyond conventional concert formats

The music does not follow a familiar dramaturgy of melody, repetition and resolution. It works with timbre, space, noise, movement and density, creating a listening situation in which perception is not constantly directed towards a musical goal.

The visual elements open an additional layer. They can intensify associations, trigger new inner images or provide entirely different ways of approaching what is heard.

For distinctive places and shared experiential spaces

Resonance Evenings are suited to cultural venues, galleries, seminar houses, hotels, health and education formats and distinctive evening events. Duration, musical design and the relationship with visual elements can be adapted to venue, occasion and audience.

Die BeTonung

When sound becomes not only audible, but physically perceptible.

Die BeTonung is an individual one-to-one setting combining vibroacoustics, spatial composition and conscious perception. Sound is received not only through hearing, but can also be perceived as subtle physical vibration.

The focus is on original sound spaces composed for the particular intimacy of the individual setting. Low frequencies, spatial movement and sonic textures create a perceptual situation in which listening and bodily sensing intertwine.

Vibroacoustics as part of the composition

In Die BeTonung, the bodily transmission of vibration is not used as an additional effect, but as part of the musical design itself. Audible and tactile frequencies are connected to create a multidimensional sound space.

Here too, the music does not necessarily follow familiar melodic or rhythmic structures. It leaves room for individual perceptions, inner images and personal associations.

A format for individual resonance spaces

Die BeTonung is designed for one person at a time and offers an intensive, consciously reduced sound experience in a one-to-one setting. Duration, musical design and vibroacoustic elements are adapted to the specific context.

Artistic practice

Perception as translation between sensory spaces.

My work moves between electroacoustic and acousmatic composition, sound art and visual design.

A central point of departure is my synaesthetic perception: sounds appear to me as colours, geometric forms and spatial movements. Conversely, images, architecture and visual structures can trigger musical ideas.

Smells and tastes can also evoke inner images, forms and atmospheres that can in turn become sound. Perception therefore becomes a process of translation between different sensory spaces.

From this interplay I develop sound spaces and graphic scores in which music is understood not only as a temporal sequence, but also as form, space and movement. Spatial composition, electroacoustic sound and the deliberate dissolution of familiar musical structures shape my artistic language.

The compositions are not simply a backdrop to my work – they form an artistic space of their own.

On the TONATURO channel you can hear selected electroacoustic and acousmatic works, sound spaces and current compositions. It offers a direct way to experience the sound language behind the Resonance Keynotes, Mobile Sound Modules and other formats.

Sinnverlust

What happens when external orientation no longer holds – and people have to rediscover their own inner point of reference?

In my book “Sinnverlust” I explore questions of orientation, identity and social change. It focuses on phases in which familiar structures lose their self-evidence and, at the same time, create the possibility of reorganising perception, values and one's own life.

These questions also form a background to my work with TONATURO. Sound can open an experiential space where language and rational understanding alone do not always reach further.

About

Julia Urbani-Schmerlaib

Musicologist, composer and founder of TONATURO.

My professional background connects musicology and music psychology with questions of perception, communication and human development.

A central point of departure in my artistic practice is my synaesthetic perception. Sound appears to me as colour, form and spatial movement; images and architecture can in turn trigger musical ideas. Smells and tastes can also evoke inner images from which sound develops. Over the years, this exchange between the senses has become a distinctive compositional language.

My work combines electroacoustic and acousmatic composition, spatial sound and vibroacoustics with scientific communication and direct experience. I am less interested in music as decorative accompaniment than in what happens when sound itself becomes a space for perception, memory and new perspectives.

TONATURO emerged from precisely this connection: not placing science, sound art and the exploration of human perception side by side, but making them experienceable together.
